Five-minute reads, no jargon left unexplained.
Stocks are sold in fixed bundles called board lots. The cheaper the share, the bigger the lot.
A ₱27 stock trades in lots of 100 shares, so the smallest order is about ₱2,700 plus fees. A ₱1,315 stock trades in lots of 5. Orders that are not in full lots go to the odd-lot board, where they can be harder to fill. The calculator above rounds to full lots for you.
Each candle shows the open, high, low and close for one period. Green closed higher; red closed lower.
The thick body runs from the open to the close. The thin wicks show the highest and lowest prices traded. A long lower wick means buyers pushed the price back up. Switch the stock chart above to "Candles" to see them on real-looking (sample) data.
Invest the same amount on a schedule, whatever the price. You buy more shares when prices are low.
Example: ₱5,000 every payday. When a stock is at ₱25 you get 200 shares; at ₱20 you get 200 shares plus change for the next round, depending on board lots. Over time this smooths out your average cost and removes the stress of timing the market. It does not guarantee a profit.
Commission, VAT, exchange and clearing fees, and a sales tax when you sell. They add up on small trades.
On a ₱5,000 buy, a ₱20 minimum commission is 0.4% of your money, not 0.25%. That is why very small, frequent trades are expensive. Use the calculator to see your break-even price: the stock has to rise past it before you make a profit.
Some companies share profits as cash; others give extra shares. Both have record and payment dates.
To receive a dividend you must own the stock before the ex-date. Cash dividends are usually subject to a final withholding tax. Dividend yield is the yearly dividend divided by the share price; a very high yield can be a warning sign, not a bargain.
An index fund buys the whole basket for you. Picking stocks takes more time and more risk.
Index funds and ETFs that track a market index give you instant diversification at a low cost. Picking individual stocks can beat the index, but most people who try do not. Many investors do both: a core in an index fund and a small part in stocks they research.
